REPORT: ALMOST A THIRD OF COMPANIES LACK CYBERDEFENSESSource: Security Wire DigestPosted on September 12, 2002 A new survey of corporate information security specialists reveals that despite heightened infosecurity awareness, 30 percent believe that their firms remain unable to mount an adequate defense against such assaults. The annual study is a joint undertaking of the Internet Security Alliance (IS Alliance), the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) and RedSiren Technologies. Although 88 percent of those polled acknowledge that their companies recognize information security as a critical business issue, one-third say network security still isn't a visible priority at the executive level. "Businesses rely on the Internet and e-commerce more than ever," said Dave McCurdy, executive director of the IS Alliance. "Confronting new cyberthreats without IT security practices is not sound corporate management." The 225 IT specialists that responded to the study are from companies around the world. Results were evenly divided when respondents were asked if last year's terrorist events heightened concerns about cyberthreats. "It may reflect a mentality of 'it will never happen to me,'" says Tom Orlowski, NAM's VP of information systems. "In today's world, that may be a dangerous complacency."
