SECURITY A TOP CONCERN FOR HANDHELD USERS IN THE ENTERPRISE

Source: PDA Buzz

Posted on April 1, 2002

      As smart handheld devices continue to penetrate U.S. corporate environments, it's clear that security measures to protect data sent, received, and stored on these devices is a top priority. Survey results presented in a new IDC study, Corporate Concerns for PDA Security, show that nearly one-third (32.9%) of 1,145 respondents from IDC's Mobile Advisory Council were "very concerned'' about the security of data stored on handheld devices.

      "Corporations are concerned about the levels of security required in handheld and mobile devices,'' says Kevin Burden, manager of IDC's Smart Handheld Devices research. "They are now recognizing security expenses as part of the overall cost of doing business in a widely distributed, increasingly wireless ebusiness environment.''

      According to IDC's survey, over the next 12 months mobile security concerns will be addressed and a higher degree of confidence will be put in mobile security solutions. This suggests that the market for software and hardware security products will intensify during this time period. Several trends are spurring this movement toward better security. These include the adoption of wireless, the advent of Web services, the requirement for digital identity, and the increasing need for remote access.

      Key Findings:
- Mobile security concerns are more prominent at large (500+ employees) companies;
- Corporate IT consumers prefer to have their security solutions embedded with the system's hardware or operating system;
- Security within the IT world is moving from point solutions to integrated families of products;
- Physical and IT security must be intertwined;
- Although the changing requirements for security will create opportunities for services and products, it will pose new challenges for CIOs and IT managers.

      IDC believes that corporations are resetting their IT security plans in 2002, and that the events of September 11 have corporations rethinking security in all aspects.
