BT ACCIDENTALLY PUBLISHES PRIVATE LOGIN NUMBERS

      A plan to prevent British Telecom (BT) customers from abusing a flat-fee phone service inadvertently provided easy access to hundreds of confidential network login numbers.

      The snafu, which has since been corrected, listed the numbers on a Web site for BT Together, a service that provides unmetered phone service for customers calling from home. It publicly lists numbers that receive heavy use, believing they must belong to ISPs and are exempt from the flat rate.

      But remote employees also frequently use BT Together, and some published numbers actually were private dial-in numbers that potentially could be used illegally to access corporate systems.

      No such breaches, however, were publicized immediately following the discovery.
