POLICE URGED TO INCREASE AWARENESS OF ELECTRONIC CRIME

      Police commissioners in Australia have been told of the need for the country's law enforcement agencies to enhance their capacity to detect electronic crime.

      The Australian Bureau of Criminal Intelligence last night unveiled the expansion of its Canberra-based National Fraud Desk to include e-crime.

      In Sydney to launch the initiative, Western Australia Police Commissioner Barry Matthews said the desk will coordinate the national exchange of information about e-crime.

      He believes e-crime can only only increase as electronic commerce and access to the Internet grows.

      "But I think we would be kidding ourselves if we thought we are aware of the extent of the problem and secondly that we're equipped at this particular point to do it," he said.

      "I think it is an increasing growth area. The trend is we will see more and more electronic crime."
